Healthy Christian theology affirms hell as a spiritual state of separation from the love of God--not a geographical location beneath the earth's surface. There's nothing but dirt, rock, and magma down there.
God's love is always offered, always available, but sometimes in our ignorance we turn our backs on it--that is the "outer darkness" Jesus described.
